Pleated Forms
This latest project is inspired by the striking architecture of the pink oyster mushroom. I’m working with pleated, translucent fabric to translate its delicate structures into something that plays with light and movement as much as form. The fabric’s color-mixing qualities create a shifting, almost pixelated effect as light passes through.
The process is both technical and intuitive. I collaborated with Rado Pleating in Surry Hills to achieve the precise pleat style I had in mind. Once pleated, I formed the fabric into tubes, sealing them with iron-on adhesive. I then stretched one end over boning to create organic, twisting forms that evoke both mushroom and movement.
As a final step, I assembled the pieces in groups, alternating colors to emphasize contrast and flow.
