Textural Diptych
I’m working on textured panels inspired by the gilled underside of mushrooms. One panel is made from hundreds of hand-cut rice paper strips and the other incorporates pleated paper remnants left over from the fabric pleating process I’m using for another sculpture. I’m drawn to the way subtle shifts in depth catch the light, creating a quiet interplay between structure and movement.
I cut and hand-dye each strip of paper, watching the dye settle unevenly, forming natural tonal variations. The strips hang to dry, curling and softening slightly. I glue each one onto the wooden panel, one by one. The process is slow.
With every strip I add, the surface evolves. Shadow becomes the most important ingredient, shifting constantly as my eye travels across the panel.
